One of the top ten endangered...

Posted on AOL, originally on askmen.com:

The Coral Triangle, Sulu and Sulawesi Seas
Located in the seas between Indonesia, Malayasia and the Philippines, the Coral Triangle represents the richest variety of coral reef, plant and animal life in the world, with over 450 types of coral found here alone. Tourists from all around the world come to this endangered locale to go diving and see turtles nesting. A recent study from John Hopkins University, however, found that approximately 70% of coral reefs in the seas of Southeast Asia are endangered. The culprits responsible for damage to the reefs include fishing practices that use cyanide and dynamite, as well as general overfishing, coral bleaching, sedimentation, and pollution.

Rescue mission: One way to protect coral reefs is by implementing a Marine Protected Area (MPA). MPAs promote responsible fishing and habitat protection. Their aim is to protect and care for reefs and their accompanying endangered marine life in much the same way as national parks are managed.

So sad, but true. Unfortunately reef sanctuaries share one big problem as a whole - they share the same ocean as the non-protected areas. When it comes to bleaching, hurricanes, disease, etc. - these ailments are typically not discriminant to what reefs they affect. Although I think these sanctuaries definitely help, I see it more or less as part solution to a very big problem.
