question about live rock

might be a crazy question, but im curious if there is a way to tell if live rock is actually "live"..I have 110 lbs of what i beleive to be live rock in my tank but im curious if theres any way I can prove its "live". my ammonia and nitrite levels are consistently zero, is that proof enough?

Is there any bioload in the tank or is the rock just sitting in there by itself? If there is no bioload adding to the ammonia, then you won't have any readings. Uncured rock will usually have some dieoff which adds to the bioload until it's cured so I'd say if readings stay good and consitantly zero, it's probably okay but then again, how long have you had it in that tank and testing the water? If not for long, and no fish in with it, throw some extra food in the water, let it sit and keep testing to see if you get any kind of ammonia/nitrite spike.

"live" just referes to the rocks ability to convert ammonia/nitrites into less harmful nitrate. There could be no color or other forms of life on the rock whatsoever but if it'll filter, then it's considered "live".

the rock has been in the tank for well over 6 months now, with livestock fish being in there for atleast 3 months.

It's proof that something is taking care of them. Live rock is alive because of bacteria and other living creatures. If there is someting in your tank that you didn't buy, it almost for sure came from the live rock. As long as you buy your rock from reputable sources it is more then likely live rock. You could always take the rock out of the tank and dry it off with a towel and set it in your car for a few days. If you find that you have to sell your car due to the dead fish smell, you will know for sure and without any doubt that the rock was indeed alive........... This method is not recomended by the staff of reef central or anyone else for that matter. It's just an idea!............

Yup, the rock is 100% live then. If not, you'd be seeing all sorts of ammonia/nitrite spikes with those fish in there with it.

Just be sure to keep a tight lid on the tank to keep the rock from jumping out. I had it happen once! No, really I did.
