DIY Phosphate reactor

I'd like to set up a phosphate reactor. I was thinking about setting up a hang on the back filter and fill it with phosban media. Will this work. I have a Aqua Tech 300. It's quite a big filter and will hold alot of media. What do you think?

Do you have a sump on the tank? You could just put the media in a bag in a high-flow section of the sump.

A hang-on probably wouldn't work on your sump, since the water level in your sump is (hopefully!) far too low for it to function well. And why put a hang-on on your tank itself, when you could just do something simpler down in the sump?

That wouldn't be a phosphate reactor, but would just be a place for phosphate to sit while water washed by. A phosphate reactor is a fluidized bed reactor that percolates the media, utilizing the media most efficiently. Putting the media into a sock and placing in the sump or in an HOB filter will work, but the media will be used inefficiently (water will channel and only some of the surface area of the media will be exposed). With the cost of media being what it is, it really makes sense to invest in an inexpensive fluidized bed reactor such as a phosban reactor (only around $35).

Yes I do have a sump and the level is a hair too high, a power outage and there's a small trickle of water headed to the drain. I thought that since I didn't have a reactor that I would need some way of getting the water to flow over the media, but I could rig up something in the sump. I'm not familiar with the media. Is it like biocubes in a bag or is it like sand. I've been trying to find a use for that Aqua tech. Maybe a hang-on fuge for a frag tank.

I had no idea they were reasonably priced. I thought the reactor was in the price range of a calcium reactor. Thank you

Most phosphate media is provided in small particles, similar to carbon media.

I think I need more space under my tank stand...
Sump + RO tank + Kalk reactor + Calcium Reactor.. and now a Phosban reactor? Whats next? hehe... My husband is going to be ****ed when I cut a hole in the wall, hehe...

Drywall can be patched. It's replaceable. Having an awesome reef tank, on the other hand. . . PRICELESS!

I hear ya. If there is room you can hang a phosban reactor in the sump.
