Sump and skimmer noob

Hey everyone!

So I am planning my sump, and I understand the idea of baffles to reduce the bubbles.

My question is probbaly a stupid one, but I've never used or seen a skimmer running in real life.

If the water is pumped into the skimmer, and then pushed out should I have a piece of baffle extending under the outflow of the skimmer?

I guess I'm really asking how does the water flow in a sump with a skimmer...?

I hope you all can understand that ^ lol

A skimmer basically injects an air/water mixture into a tube that allows the air bubbles to rise and foam out the top. The foam is caught by the collection cup and removed. Usually the skimmer just drains into the same section of the sump that the skimmer sits in.

The baffles are usually in a treo after the skimmer. It forces water to go over, then under, then over the three baffles. The one pass under the middle baffle is what helps remove the bubbles.

My sump is a 10 gallon that does not have any baffles. Im just lucky enough to have a skimmer that doesnt make enough micro bubbles to get into my display.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I'm still confused on how if the input and output on the skimmer are in the same place, how does the water get clean?

The air bubbles that rise to the top of the skimmer carry small particles of waste up with them. When the bubbles flow over in to the collection cup they take the waste particles with them, thus removing the waste from the system.
