narrowed it down to 2 skimmers
im looking for a skimmer for my 110 gallon sps tank. it will be a bare bottom tank, but will also have xenia/ macros for nutrient export in the sump/ fuge.
ive narrowed it down to 2 skimmers. the MR-1 with a gen-x 6000 pump mr-1 or the octopus NW- 200 nw-200 which do you think would be best for my situation, and is there something you would reccomend over these two for the tank im planning? or is neither one strong enough for the tank? thanks |

For a BB system the MR1, even better would be an MR2. You need to be able to export nutrients FAST.

i just sold my MR1, i am not trying to get you to change your mind. But the MR beckett skimmers need constant adjusting to get the good skimmate that you want

Not my experience with becketts. They require adjustment to get set, but not after that. I don't think there is a skimmer out there that works faster. I have a Barr skimmer on order from Austin Oceans right now. I ordered the 2000. They come with air flow meters and dispersion plates standard and the twist lock feature is awesome. If you don't mind spending a bit more I would go that route. http://austinoceans.com/products-ski...tandardSkimmer

MR2 would be my second choice. If you are going BB you cannot skimp on the skimmer.

yea, i know. going BB, you cant skip on anything. its just everytime i pick a skimmer i find a bunch of people who dont like it for some reason or another and then i get chased away from it.
anyobdy else have input on the mr2? |

Nice thing about the MR2 is you can turn it into an MR3 if you go with a bigger tank or just need the extra capacity.

I would get the NW-200, its $220 and you can mod it increase performance. Becketts are very powerful skimmers, but they tend to be loud and inefficient.

The skimmer has gotten positive reviews, but there are better options IMO. Octopus skimmers are very good for the price, in fact, I don't think there is a skimmer that can produce as well for the price.

I have a beckett skimmer for sale. It looks just like the mr1 or mr2 I have to measure it. I am not sure the brand - It is in great shape and I will sell it for 150. I am in deer park.

Sherm71tank- I won't debate anything as there have been a multitude of threads arguing the differences between beckett and NW and I don't think that starting another one is going to do any good.

teen- The Octopus NW-200 is the same size as my H&S 200-1260 that I use for my 110 SPS tank. The pump is not the same, but if you find you need more power than you can do the gate valve mod or the mesh wheel mod or even replace the pump.

the way i see it right now is that more $$ doesnt neccessarily mean a better skimmer. thats why im leaning towards the octopus NW200.
there all gunna pull out junk, i plan on having a crazy amount of flow, and the xenia/ macro in the fuge along with a phosban reactor. im only using tonga branch so theres not guna be a lot of area for detritus to hide.

I forgot who posted a mesh wheel mod on an Octopus Skimmer, they actually had to lengthen the neck by a couple of feet only using a mere 65 watts. I used to have an MRC-2R myself, dual beckett. I now have an Octopus DDNW-250, less noise, less heat, adjustment is much easier, less eruptions, ...when you clean a beckett and start it back up it will take at least 4hours, when you get used to it to set the skimmer back up. A needlwheel can be reset within 10-15 min. Now when my MRC was cleaned and set back up it skimmed like mad, but did require alot more tweaking and constant adjustments throughout the week as the air silencers accumulate dust and the becketts slowly gather excess salt. If power shuts off then restarts when you are not home, the skimmer will boil out a gallon or more out of your tank, have a large resevoir. I know from personal experience, a needlwheel can boil out some but maybe a cup or less.
