water movement and powerheads
I am curious as to what the general flowplan using powerheads is in an aquarium.
I have one large powerhead at the far end of my tank and it typically points towards my HOS skimmer that is on the other side of the tank, it seems to do well, but upon reajustment of my powerhead, I pointed it towards the rear of the tank, over the top of a rock spot my shrimp like to hide on, and realized that it was a major dead spot as detrius stirred up. not only that but the wandering sand bed due to the water movement is always entertaining but do I want my sand bed to be moved that much? |

Not sure if stirred detritus is bad but I like cripse clear water better. You can adjust powerhead a little more angle to the top so the flow does not go too much to the buttom.

how big is that powerhead? you could get yourself a wavemaker, and this helps keep eveything stirred-up. a constant waterflow isnt that great anyway.

the use of power heads is also determined by the corals that you plan to have.
I like creating zones of flow and use three hydors to do it because they give a turbulant flow and are easy to direct. The top layer of my tank has the most flow-- a hydor koralina three gives me that--it also keeps the surface water churning which is good. I have a koralina 2 in the corner but directed at the middle of the reef. This keeps lps corals very happy. I have a koralina one in the middle of the tank directed at the opposite bottom corner that my loc lines are directed towards. This keeps a nice flow going across the bottom of the argonite--not strong enough to stir it up.
