i have hair algae and one of the things considered is that my vho actinics are more than a year old. can actinics shift to red which will increase the likelyhood of hair algae?

lol I finally changed mine after having them for 3 years over my tank. I didn't notice any increase or decrease in algae when I changed the bulbs.

Has to be some phosphate / nitrate but yes they can contribute. I have twice killed off all HA growth on a tank that I ran VHO only on several years ago. Replacing the lamps that were over a year old (frobably 15 - 18 months) twice completely reversed the algae growth. It does not mean that they are definitely the only cause, there must be some phosphate, eventhough it may not be measurable, but changing the lamps is one thing that will atleast help even if it doesnt eliminate the problem. And it could be the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. Changing them could solve the algae problem on its own.
