Question DUbai? any info at all regarding reefs

I am moving to dubai in about 6 months as my mrs has got a job there. i just wondered if we have any dubai members and if anyone know the regulations on reefs in the UAE.

i know certain places have live rock and coral bans and i want to take my new obsession with me.

cheers for any help.

I used to live just down the road in Abu Dhabi - and go back every year for holidays. Just last November I ran across a marine fish store for the first time ever out there, and stopped in for a look and a chat.

Apparently, reefing is beginning to catch on and a number of shops have opened up in Dubai too.

Prices vary quite a lot compared to the UK (where I am). For instance, Yellow Tangs were around $80 each, but a beautiful adult Emperor Angel (8") was 'only' $120. The owner explained this was simply due to where the specimens are shipped in from. Over all, I thought the quality of stock was outstanding.

My advise would be to take as much equipment as you can with you, because you'll pay premium prices out there otherwise.

I too lived down the street from Dubai. 15 or so years ago. One thing I can assure you of is that being in the proximity of the Gulf, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Indian Ocean etc, the livestock quality and variety is going to be amazing and at a fraction of the cost here in the USA. The equipment, however, is another story. I have Arab friends that reside in Dubai, and most of them are heirs to big oil tycoons in the Middle East with big fortunes. Some of their tanks that I have seen in their Mansions put to shame the best of the very best tanks that I have seen in the US. But that is not because these people take this hobby as a passion (like me and you) but because having a huge aquarium in the house with literally tens of thousands of dollars spent on monthly upkeep is a status symbol. It's an ego boost, like having their horses and camels (no joke, no stereotyping here) finishing first in a race.

You'll have a great time there, mate - particularly if you are into sports. Great facilities - golfers heaven for 8 months of the year (bit hot for the other 4 !).

I will be in Dubai next week so if you want to take a ride with us on the family boat then please let me know. My cell number in Dubai is 050 344 7677 .. I will be there mid week. The boat should be equiped with fishing, and scuba diving equipments and on top of that it has under water cameras to see on the screen what is there.
