Anyone know why there are like dark red marounish spots on the rock, you can see them they are on left and right side. I dont know what it is, some sort of corraline algae maybe is it good or bad?

looks like a type of coralline algae. I have some in my tank. I think it gives it a nice color change from the regular purple.

The dark red stuff seemed, in my tank, to flourish right along with the coralline algae: it's harmless, imho, not as desirable as coralline, but seems to be kind of a precursor to it: the coralline would sort of edge it over.

My fox eats that stuff pretty well. I like it myself, I have 3-4 large patches of it. I actually think its better looking then the coralline. I went to a FS the other day and they had a really bright darkgreen slime algae in a few of their tanks that I thought was real pretty. I asked the guy what kind it was and he just said it was some form of algae he kept around cause it didn't bother anything and was kinda cool.

If its hard then its purple coraline , and a sing your tanks on the right track. Coraline comes in purple , brown , and sought after pink. I get pink growing only on PVC i use for hiding spots and a shelf.
