Just ordered my new skimmer

Well I had to breakdown and order a new skimmer. With my plant closing its doors yesterday I was on a tight budget. Here is a link to the skimmer I bought.

That's where I got mine from... Quick shipping from there.

From what I can tell, these Octopus skimmers do an awesome job for the price...

I was gonna say that "You can say that again". But you already have.

Mine was the same way from them, ordered it one day and it showed up the next. They even called to verify that it had arrived and was ok.

yeah not quiete sure how to adjust this thing. It has a standpipe on the side you adjust up and down to adjust the water level. just not sure how high I should have the water level. How long should it take to start seeing waste?

My only complaint about the Octopus skimmers is that they should provide (or sell if necessary) better adaptors to go from metric to standard. I've found the plumbing issues to be a pain in the butt.

I ended up buying a 1.5" union and grinding down the insert so I could swap it with the metric one. After that I was able to plumb it with standard 1.5" fittings.

The inlet has been more of a problem for me.

For the recircs 1 1/4" PVC slips right into the metric output plumbing.

I decided to take a slightly different route. Mine is fed from the return from my refugium.

This is a work in progress and I'll probably tweak it a bit once I get my new tank plumbed into it.

Basically, this is the way it will work.

1) Tank return goes through a filter sock into the return chamber in the sump.

2) Water is pumped directly from the return chamber up to my refugium.

3) Refugium return feeds directly into the skimmer (with ball valves in place to allow the skimmer to be taken out of service)

4) Skimmer feeds back to the main pump chamber in the sump.

I've read varying opinions on how the skimmer should be hooked up, but the benefits of this configuration seemed pretty good.

So what kinda pump do you have feeding it?

Thanks a TON for the step by step process, i'm very plumbing handicapped, and was hoping to redo it this spring and that is a BIG BIG BIG HELP!

once again thanks!

I've got a old Cap2200 that's pumping about 400GPH into the refugium. Right now all of that is going back throught the skimmer, but I can adjust the flow with the ball valves if needed.

As I understand it you want 1 to 1.5 times your total system volume going through the skimmer per hour.
