recent discovery...black bubble growing from LR..ID help?

I wish I could be more decriptive, but over the last couple weeks I have noticed a "black bubble" growing from a piece of LR. It is about the size of a quarter now and looks lke someone was chewing black bubble gum in my tank. I cannot see into it, but it continues to grow.

I will take a picture and post it, but having found nothing searching the internet, I figured I should ask the pros.

Any suggestions on what it is?

Thanks,

Tom

It sounds like bubble algae. Is it jet black or just look black. Bubble algae can appear black, but is really dark green. If its bubble algae, just pop it and remove the burst bubble.

Do not break the bubble or it will spread. Anyone here will tell you to try and remove the bubble without popping it. You can try your luck by plucking it off, but I think the best way is to use a flat blade screwdriver and dig a little of the rock out under it so not to pop it. Look up 'Valonia' and you will see what I mean. Valonia is the correct name for bubble algae.

I have popped 3 or 4 in my tank and have never have had them spread. Leaving it is worse than popping them. There are plenty of threads disscussing this.
