protein skimmer- advice on a new brand/model pls

Hi All,
I was hoping to get some advice on getting a quality protein skimmer; I've used Red Sea/berlin in the past, yet was hoping to get an upgrade. Maybe euro-reef or asm? Which is the best brand/model?

Thanks for reading.

I'd say ASM or Euro Reef

These guys have good deals on both along with the new Pacific Coast recirc needle wheels.

If your budget will allow, spring for a Deltec skimmer. If not, then ASM, Euroreef are fine choices. I have heard good things about the PC Octopus skimmers, but I cannot speak from experience about them.

Funny! I just posted this tonight on another thread. I think it's exactly what you're looking for.

If your budget allows, H&S or Deltec are great choices. The German pumps definitely outperforms the China made pumps. If your budget does not allow, then EuroReef or ASM is the best bang for the buck, but both uses China made pumps. Sent you PM, check your PM inbox.

I used to be a firm believer of Aqua-C skimmers and they all performed quite well, but not compared to what I have now. Here's my progression of changes... wished I knew about the German made skimmers a long time ago.

Tank #1, originally 240g FOWLR ===> 175g FOWLR
EuroReef >> AquaC EV >> ASM >> H&S A200-1260

Tank #2, 60g Reef
AquaC Remora >> Remora Pro >> Deltec AP600

Tank #3, 75g Reef
AquaC Remora Pro >> Rem Pro w/Mag5 >> Deltec APF600

I would have saved a lot of money if I discovered the efficient German skimmers up front and was willing to spend the money for them. The are extremely quiet, energy efficient, put very little heat back into the water and draws more air. Being that all 3 models I have now are recirculating skimmers, there's more contact time and much better foaming. I like to skim wet and this is the what I get on my 60g and need to clean every 2 days. I used to get this after about 7-10 days when I was using the AquaC Remora Pro.

Everyone sells the APF600 for exactly the same price. You may just get a break on sales tax or shipping only. For Deltecs, you are suppose to go to a local dealer within 50 miles of your area for local pickup. If you go to the Deltec website, they are suppose to refer you to your LFS as well, some sort of not to compete agreement and regional responsibility.

The Red Sea Berlin should work as well as any of the other units if it's setup RIGHT. At one time that Model was Top-of-the-Line. Things havn't changed that much on how skimmers work. If you just want something NEW ok. But I think with a little work it should be MORE then ok. Just my 2 cents.

no, you are wrong, things have changed: needlewheels are much more efficient and productive.
