Shelter dogs?
Did anyone catch this show on HBO last night? It's a documentary about shelter dogs and the people that work with them. It was shot at Roundout kennels which is near Albany, NY. The director/owner there is Sue Sternberg and she is an amazing woman. She is quite well known in rescue/dog circles as being a very good trainer/behavoralist. It is worth a watch if you ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes at these places. Although her shelter is far from the norm. But the same dilemmas are found everywhere. This show is not for the sensitive as they do show euthanasia. For anyone interested....HBO schedule for shelter dogs

Isn't it amazing how many purebreds end up at shelters? Especially beagles, i see a lot of those. That's where I got my girl, and I don't understand why any one would get rid of her. She is the model of perfect dog behavior around my girls and she protected me from a rabid racoon that tried to attack us one night. I only wish I could handle more dogs...
The thing that i loved to watch was sue's ability to "read" dogs. This one couple brought in a cocker spaniel that looked all the world to be a cute little puppy. And she said straight off he wasn't going up for adoption. The guy was barely out the door before she said she wasn't going to put it up it was a biter and very aggressive (as the dogs wagging his tail and being cute.) the staff talks her into letting the dog settle in before temperment testing it. three weeks later you see this apparently sweet little dog viciously attacking a fake hand that's trying to take it's treat. and i mean grabbing and shaking , pulling on this hand multiple times. It was frightening to watch. I could only imagine this cute little dog going to some other shelter only to go home with a house with small children. And she saw that in the dog from the very beginning. but i'm warning you, bring tissues if you are an animal person and you watch this. And hug your dogs too!

I'll have to watch for a rerun. My neighbors rescue St. Bernards and German Shepards. They rehab them and find them homes.
