Question OT: Any geocachers in URS?

Our family dabbled in geocaching this summer in the Adirondacks w/ a borrowed GPS receiver.

Santa brought me a Garmin eTrex Legend this year. I've purchased a premium membership to geocaching.com, downloaded GSAK and Cachemate, and have an old Palm m125 loaded with about 100 caches within 12 miles of my house. (My wife and I actually hit a couple of caches on the way to Geneseo when the kids were at my parents!)

Any of you folks into geocaching? Any tips for a newb? I think this is a great, inexpensive way for families to spend some time together.

Scott,

Our family (o.k., mostly me!) has been caching for years. We are "Rochrach" on geocaching.com (and navicache.com and terracaching.com). If I don't send you a PM with more info, send me a PM to remind me.

Scott-

My wife and I started doing it this past summer as a chance to get outside, get some exercise, and spend time together.

It's fantastic! We hit a whole bunch on a day trip to Letchworth (Lots of great views/locations for caches). Only one has gotten us so far; one on a Lake Erie overlook... We'll get it in spring!

It's a blast... I really enjoy it...

If I attempted to explain it to you, it would sound pretty goofy; so I'll leave it to the professionals:

I never would have thought it would be so fun, but there is something to be said for the "thrill of the hunt".

I also have an Garmin etrex legend. Works fine -- well, the joystick gets flaky from time to time (common problem) -- but it's still going after 2 years of tough use (dropped and tossed carelessly in the car/backpack alot). I'd still buy another one.

Both Garmin and Magellan will work . Best advice is simply to go to a store (e.g. sporting goods) and hold each type in your hand. Pick the one which "feels" better to you and has buttons that seem to make more sense to you. (Garmin and Magellan each have a different style and feel but make equivalent products at equivalent price points.) You can also sign up for free on geocaching.com and attend an "event" in your area -- just post a note in the event saying that you are hoping someone will let you try out different GPSr units. In the Rochester area, the ADK outdoor group has days at Mendon Ponds Park where they do all sorts of hiking and kayak demos and GPSr units are available for trial usage.

You don't need bells and whistles (e.g. topographical maps, road maps, color display). The entry level model for under $100 will work fine.

I like the Garmin a lot, (I'm an instruction manual-reading nerd, so I feel very comfortable with using all of its features).

There's a geocaching event on Sunday, January 20th from 11:00-4:00 at Mendon Ponds park that my family will be attending:

We're planning on hitting a few around our house this weekend, too. It should be nice with the weather warming up a bit in the next few days.

John- I like the idea of a reef-related cache. When I start hiding them, that'll be my first cache theme!

I was just telling my wife about this the other day. It seems really cool! There are only a few spots in my area, but I really want to start doing it! Seems like a good way to make myself want to get out and do some physical activity.
