A Small Tang and 1.5 Years

Well an LFS near me has gotten in two small Purple Tangs (Z. xanthurum) at about 3 or 4 inches.

My 90 gallon aquarium has been set up for 6 months now and only has 2 Firefish and 1 Cleaner Shrimp. The aquarium will only be set up for another 1.5 years (until June of 2009), so it is quite temporary.

I was wondering what you guys thought about the Purple Tang in my size tank for a few years.

I know most would recommend a Kole or Tomini, but I'm considering a Purple Tang to replace an Auriga Butterflyfish and that's about the only tang I would want to replace my Butterflyfish with (I like the Powder Blue and Naso too, but I know those are just out of the question).

I think you will be fine for a few years. I had a baby purple in my 55 for a year until I upgraded. How long is your tank? Length is the most important thing with tangs.

My purple (3") has stayed relatively small for the last year, I think you will be fine for a while with a purple in a 90 gallon. Good luck.

So the general concensus is yes? Great!

Anyone who feels otherwise? I would honestly like to hear from you too.

Actually, I was just thinking about this, but I was wondering, how exactly should the Tang behave towards fish I add after it?

I want to jump on this deal as it's the first time I've seen a Purple Tang for sale, and it's at a great price. My tank has been set up for 6 months so I believe it's ready for the Tang.

I have:

2 Firefish

I plan to add:

1 Lemonpeel Angelfish
1 Banggai Cardinalfish

And some other fish; any suggestions?

So will it be fine or do I risk it being frisky to new tankmates?

They are very aggressive! My brother has one about 3-4" and it would own his 5" halfmoon angel! Needless to say he is going in my tank with a 6" passer angel! Firefish are very easy going fish, they will get spooked and picked on very easy then could never come out and starve. You might have to get rid of the firefish if the purple is aggressive, every fish is different though. So your tearing the tank down and selling everything in a year and a half?

Yeah, going off to university so no time and no space.

I've heard of Purple Tangs being aggressive to similar-shaped fish, and other herbivores, but as I plan to add neither of those, I thought it wouldn't bother any other fish. Right?

The angel will pick off of the rocks, too, though. However, the tang is small, and not all purples are as aggressive as they say. My purple tang is an absolute marshmallow, so you might get lucky and be fine, too. I'd go for it. You could also try removing the tang to the QT when you add the angel if you have to, or the mirror trick even.

just put one in my 90 last week and it's doing great. It's not been aggressive but has definitely become the boss of the tank. The Cherub Angel and a-hole yellow damsel are no longer in charge, which makes me very happy.

Does the Purple Tang act aggressively to any of the fish? Or does it just put other aggressors in their place?

There have been no physical battles. When I first put it in the Angel and the Damsel got all huffy like they usually do but the Tang stood it's ground and showed off the tail spines and they backed down. 2 Days later all was fine. Now the Tang swims wherever it wants and doesn't bother anyone.
