Pump selection question

Currently fitting my 90 gallon FW tank into a full reef setup, and in planning everything out I have now got to choose an appropriate pump to return water from my sump/refugium. I currently plan on having a 1-1/2 inch hold drilled into my tank for the overflow, down into a 35 gallon sump/refrugium and I need to figure out what size of pump I will need to perform the best. Im kinda lost on how much GPH im going to need.

Any links to charts would also be appreciated.

On that size of tank a 1" drain hole and a 3/4" return hole should do well for the sump. If you want to add a closed loop then you may need additional drilling. You just want to run about 3 to 5 times your tank volume through the sump. Many people try and put a lot more volume through the sump and end up with crazy drain noise and micro bubbles. What is usually recommended is 3 to 5 times tank volume through the sump and then you will want to get additional circulation in your display tank. The additional circulation can come from power heads or a closed loop circulation system. The total circulation will include circulation from powerheads, closed loops, and return pump from the sump to equal the desired turn over in the display.
You can check out the headloss calculator on the main page and plug in your specific information to get a good idea of what size pump you will need. I also encourage you to do a little research on circulation before you start drilling.

[welcome]

this is the head loss calculator. it will tell you your GPH loss depending on the pipe size and how high and far the water is pumped. http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/hlc2.php

this is the drain size calculator. it will tell you how many GPH your drain can handle http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/drain.php

a closed loop is just a pump that takes water out of the tank and then pumps it right back into the tank. its used just for water flow.

How far up will your pump have to push the water to your tank?

Look into Eheim 1260 and add a ball valve on the return line to give your self a little control over the flow. I'm in the process of putting together a 90 so i've done a little research already.
The Eheim is quiet, energy efficient, and can be used inside or outside the sump safely.
I bought the 1262 for my system but i think its a bit too big. I will have to just restrict flow on the return line that much more.
