lighting
hello, I am new to this site because I actually live in Erie Pennsylvania, but am currently in my sophmore year at D'Youville college in Buffalo. I currently have a 75G with a orbit on top but it just isnt enough light. I bought 2 250watt MH with 10k and two true blue actinic 110wattvho's to put into a custome hood that will be built by my dad and I. And reccomendation on height off the water for the lights? or any suggestions when buiding this canopy, We will have a large fan blowing air into it with two exhaust fans over the MH's. any suggections and or idea will help? Is their any better alternatives to lighting?

Welcome to Reef Central KPearce! What type of corals do you plan on keeping? With the assortment of lighting that you plan on using, you are going to be adding a lot of heat to a 75 gallon - not that there is anything wrong with your lighting choice, you might want to consider a chiller. The canopy sounds like it will be cool enough with the three fans, but I would keep an eye on the finished product especially if you intend to have a long photoperiod and running all of the lights simultaneously at any given time. Hello, I plan on having a mixed variety or corals, As of now I have pulsing xenia, branch hammer, green star polyps, a pocillpora acro, orange zoos, I also have a true tongan rose Bulb anenome, about 6 six inches in diameter. The acro seems to be starting to brown out with the orbit on top right now, so I had my dad move it to the top of the tank and seems to have some color coming back. As for the water temp. I have a friend back home with a similiar light set up on a 120 and his stays at 78 degrees. He also has a large fan blowing across the sump, and two fans in the canopy, if I find the tank runs to hot, We will add another fan, I also have a chiller on my nano that is rated up to 90G. I can also put a fan to blow across the water in my sump. The fans we will be running are 8in. ball bearing fans, they use them in vehicles for coal mining. My friend has had his on his tank for 7 years now and still going strong, to bad they are $50.00 a piece! I plan on haveing the lights run around 8-10 hrs.? sound right? any other things, you think I should watch out for? or suggestions I oly want to built this hood once so anything will help!!!
