usually on the bottom there will be some indication of whether the tank is tempered or not but even with that being there I would contact the manufacturer to make sure that the sides arent tempered also. You might be able to find out from someone that has the exact same tank as you

Generally only the bottom will be tempered. There should be stickers that tell you this, I am about 99% sure drilling the sides will be ok, but I have never drilled a top fin. If you go with an all-glass 55 gallon I can tell you it is just fine to drill (the sides).

Yeah I went to petsmart and the tank dimentions are 30"x18"x25" I love these dimensions and want his tank but need someway of either find if the sides are tempered or making an overflow without drilling the side??

Can't you email them and ask if the sides are tempered glass? Emails would give them the chance to go and ask someone whereas on the phone they couldnt.

look at the tank though polarized sun glasses, it if tempered it will have a cross hatch pattern to it. If its not tempered no pattern.

56 gallon from Petsmart, with the stand that is that little box in the center and some patterned woodish stuff on the sides of it? Glass front and 2 poles?f

Yea I had one of those. I hated it, as it was a pain to get stuff to fit it, and that little hole below barely fit my Rena XP2. Ended up selling it and buying a 90 gallon and built my own stand. I paid $230 for the 56 with stand at the store I believe. II believe the sides aren't tempered as they had a different appeal than the bottom, but I can't remember correctly.
It's not the 'airheads' at the store, as they aren't trained to know everything of that nature. I worked at one for 3 months and knew more than most of them there, but still we were never trained to know anything nor are we allowed to disclose some information we know as if you break it and we said you could drill it then it would come back to us. I had a guy try to ask about a new top plastic for his 150 gallon. He wanted to improvise and do something else, which I know what would work, but I can't tell him how.

Might as well buy something else honestly than drill it. I bought mine for a local shop here in Northern, VA, they sell tanks 'at cost', so my 90 drilled with an overflow was $270.

Thats the tank.I like the tank But now i'ma try and get polorized glasses to make sure it's not tempered. I am building a stand already and have lights and I don't want to go bigger then 56 gallon. I'll have 55 gallon sump with another tank running off that too so no canister filters here.
