Update : Chase's Frag tank

Well many of you know we started up a frag tank for my 6 y/o son. Well the tank we started turned out just too small to keep params right and the lighting on it was way too bright for the size of the tank as well for the corals to be happy. So we started up a new tank we found at a garage sale.

Here is the old tank. -

and without further adoi

We used equipment we either had or picked up and made this tank. I am still finishing the stand up and making the doors for it. The corals are VERY happy in this new tank and thriving well. The frog spawn and Hammer have already nearly doubled in size since he bought them from Crumble a few weeks ago. The zoas are still battling some hair alge but the astreas are making short work of it.

He has to use a ladder with work on the tank now but it is a small inconvienance for the added stability of the larger tank and this also leaves a few spots for my frags as well once i start getting some.

Once i design the hood we will be upgrading the lighting to some T5s and then with selling the PC hoods that will help with getting some more frags for his tank.

Just thought i would share and thank Crumble and RCmike again for the frags for his tank !

Yah he has already made some money off me. $5.00 per frag of Kenya trees for my tank that you gave him and he still have about 4 main frags in his tank. A member from KY is sending him some more Zoas and pallys in a few weeks to help stock his tank which was pretty awesome I thought just paying for the shipping.

This weekend we are going to do our first mushroom fragging which we have been researching. We are going to frag a red mushroom and if it is a succsess we have 4 other shrooms to frag but wanted to try it on just one at first. I will be sure to take pics of the process.

Again thanks for the comments

Awesome! That tank looks really nice!

I'm betting he's going to do well at the Frag Swap!

Just out of curiosity, what did you do with the other tank and light? I might be interested.

Really cool, Chase! What are your tank parameters? Temp, Specific gravity?

Nice job!

The light was used on this tank ( the one on the left ) until i can get him the hood built and the T5s ordered but that may take a while ( been spending way more than my alloted fishy money latley )

Crumble :

He just tested it when he got home from school today.
SG is 1.025 Current temp is 80.2

after lookin' at these pics, this looks like a kritter cage. You can tell because the front part of the frame isnt even with the rest and I see the ring in the center that could be used for a lock when the top is on. The tank should have came with a sliding screen top. I have the same tank I use for my snake. I remember it saying not to fill it up with water. No problems with any leaks?

Also, do you still have the other frag tank? You said the 130 watt was too much for it. I have a 24" 65 watt light that would probably be perfect over that tank. Let me know if you still have it and want to sale it.

it is a critter tank and the person I bought it from used it for the same thing and never had a problem with it. I have not as of yet either.

The little frag tank is just sitting in the garage , if ya have something to trade or what not let me know or just shoot me a price.

bump for the ricordia question. i'm curious too. I've sliced my regular mushroom in about 6 pieces and i ended up with 4 that attached and grew. ricordias can get pricey and i don't want to try it on them until they are proven to work.

I think it's awesome that you're getting your son interested in this hobby (ok, obsession) at an early age. I know I enjoyed keeping tanks and learning about the animals we kept when I was a kid, and it's a great teacher for responsibility and working to make a buck or two. Too many parents don't teach their children such things these days. He's a lucky guy!

I am also interested in the old frag tank if it's not already spoken for. Where did you get it?
