for a first ceph go with a bimac octo. cuttles are quite a bit more challenging (so i hear) despite their inability to climb out of the tank. only real challenge with octos is escape proofing the tank.
as with all cephs you also have to come to terms wth the fact that they have short life spans. if you keep yours for over a year, consider yourself quite lucky. |

Octos are much easier to feed (dead food is moreredily accepted) and easier to get a hold of.
Cuttles are much cooler, and more consistant. Also cuttles don't hide as effectively (they camoflage quite well but they do not squeeze into crevices as redily).

arent cuttles messy eaters? and demand every saltwater filtering system there is? like skimmers and gallons of waterchanges?
yeah i really dont like the lifespan.... |

Both animals are similar as far as endearing, intelligent, and require a more advanced keeper. The HUGE difference is in feeding. The octo is much easier and cheaper. Cuttles are hunters, they will accept some frozen/fresh foods, but only for a short time. They demand live food, and that gets expensive, especially if you raise anything other than Bandensis.
