for water polishing, power or canister filter?

Need to polish my water a bit, the Red Sea Max filters seem to leave a lot of particulates floating in the water and I figure that if I polish the water every few days it would make a huge difference.

I have a power filter right now that is rated for a 15 gallon tank that I could use, I know its not big enough for the 34 gallon Red Sea Max but for polishing duty I thought it might cut it.

What about canister filters? I've heard bad things about these being run continuously but I am only going to use it for polishing the water and removing particulates from the water column.

Are there any other options that I should also investigate?

Neither. Get a Diatom filter.

I use a canister with a micron filter for occassional water polishing. It works well, for what I need, usually cleaning up my 36 gallon in about 1 day. I have a marineland magnum 350 (got it for free) and it is so-so. It filters fine, but is annoying to put up and take down. With your *awesome* Navy flight pay bonus, you might want to look at some of the higher quality canisters which are a little more user friendly. Either way, you will probably have to mod your tank a bit.

Well, flight pay isn't that much. I'd also rather not have to mod my tank either, my idea being that I would just be able to hang whatever was necessary on the side of the tank for the hopefully short time that I would need the filter. Is this reasonable?

I use a magnum 350, mainly for running carbon and change it every 7-10 days, dont want to get any build up and can work for polishing as well, but before you go out and buy something like that, try the one that you have to see if it works. Or you may just have to get a little bigger hang on filter to do the job. Just make sure to clean it well when you are done. I used a hang on when I initially setup my tank cause it was very cloudy and cleared it up in 24hrs, but that was the only thing I used it for.
