Using overflow as refugium

Can a overflow be used as a refugium? I have a 58g oceanic with a RR. I put a durso stand pipe in there and the level is about 3 inches lower than the tank. Can i just put a couple inches of sand in there with some live rock and Cheato and will that work or is it just a waste?

Agreed, waste. Not big enough.

i wouldnt see the harm in throwing cheato behind it just as long as it recieved enought light, and you could prevent it from clogging your drain(such as eggcrate) adding sand and rock i think is a bad idea though. esp if you ever needed to take your bulkehead out for whatever reason it would be burried in sand and rock and could be a huge mess.

I wouldn't risk it for the reasons already mentioned, not large enough and would be a mess to un-do, but the biggest of the concerns to me would be the risk of it clogging the drain and overflowing water onto the floor. Not worth it IMO.

I think i will just build a sump fuge combo under my tank. Does anyone have any good pictures of a sump fuge that would fit under my 58. It would have to be 30" long or smaller.
