Zoa Pox?

Anyone else here have experience with Zoa Pox? I've read that Furan-2 will cure it so I'll give that a try.

Just read about it this morning myself. Here's what I read zoa pox . I'm not sure what caused it. Haven't added anything new to the tank before I started seeing this happening.

David, when did you last change your bulbs? Is your skimmer kicking butt, or just sitting? (Are you feeding your tank well) do you turn off pumps at feeding?
I am not sure that zoe's and SPS should be kept together, in most peoples tanks, thay can do OK.. but try stipping all the nutrients and
Sorry if I am rehashing your thoughts

Sounds from the article that Zoapox is triggered from the water being too clean or a sudden blast of brighter light! Did you upgrade your lighting or get new bulbs? Are you running carbon or chemipure?

I don't think it's my water being too clean. I feed twice a day and am actually having a small problem with algae on the sandbed. What I think it may be is the change in water temperature. Before it got cold just recently, the tank was b/w 78 and 79 day and nite. Lately with the cold weather, the house temperature is dropping and the tank was getting down to 76 at night b/c I'm not running a heater. I put a heater in today, so we'll see if that helps. Some of the zoas are growing on some large rocks in the tank so I'm hoping I don't have to treat my whole tank b/c I can't take the rocks with the zoas out.

Angel, I was thinking-- weaker lighting. I have witnessed it first hand.
I run my tank 73-76.

I have had zoas for a long time and never had them do this. When I moved them from PCs in my 55g to halides on my 150g they did fine. The only issues I ever had with them was nudibranches once and palytoxin that made me sick as a dog once.

By the way I don't have any zoos now they are still in Washington.

i'm of the opinion that the zoa pox is not fatal to the zoas, do a few water changes and you should be fine. i've had the pox show up multiple times and while i haven't figured out a cause, i haven't lost any colonies from them in a long time.

I think I have this mysterious thing on my zoa. They have all closed up and I've dipped them in an iodine dip a few times and it seems to help somebut they reappear. I thought I was seeing small white pods moving on the zoa but the pictures of the pox look very similar to what I have. I doubt it is water/light/ or temp...there is something happening to zoa and plenty of people have been posting about it on reefcentral.

it has been an observed occurence for a while now, at least two years and likely much longer.

while it might be a contagious infection, i feel if the tank conditions are good they can recover quickly and with little damage. weak or otherwise compromised zoas can be overtaken by the pox

it seems to occur most on smaller polyp zoas, and i've get to see any on polyps with green mouths(ie pe-type)

A little update. The pox seems to have passed. I lost one small colony of reds during the infection, but everything else is in the process of recuperating. I really didn't do anything other than adding a heater so that the temp didn't drop as much at night. Whew.

Huh . . . I guess its just something they fought off. I've had a few zoas closing up and withering away lately, though I've been attributing it to their close proximity to some cyano blooms. Now I'm treating the cyano with some Maracyn, and I'm hoping that no more zoas close up.

On a temperature side note, I've started using the seasonal temperature function on my AC Jr. At first I was really hesitant to let the temp go down to 75 but everything seems cool. I don't have a chiller, just using a fan (4.25") trying to keep the heat from the lights from raising the temp too much. Seasonal lights, seasonal temps, now I just need to get the moon simulator going!
