brown stuff on sand????????
I seem to be having this issue lately and cant get rid of it. I tried reducing the light but that dont make things any better. I syhphon the sand a little during water changes but no help i do 15 gallons a week for water changes. Tank size is a 120 gal been set up for about 2 years. It any seems to accumulate where the light hits the sand thats why ii thought the lights might be the issue. Lights are 2 250watt HQI with 2 96 watt actnics. Any help would be useful.

Sounds like cyano bacteria or diatoms to me, I wouldnt syphon the sand in a reef tank though - too much lost in terms of beneficial bacteria. What are you feeding and what is the flow like in the tank - need more of a tank spec breakdown really bud.

I had that problem only mine was on the rocks with heavy flow. Installed a phosban reactor and it really helped. High po4 causes algae Blums.

I wouldn't think that it would be cyno cause i can identify that but maybe diatoms. Flow is pretty good or at least it looks good nice surface movement and coral movement. I have a 700gph pump from the sump so about 450 gph from that and 2 powerheads pumping out 295 gph. thought about changing them out for some streamflows in the near future. But yeah i really didnt syphon out too much from the sand just the top layer. I feed nori, and a combination of bio-pure frozen foods mysis, plankton, and brine. A few times a week at night i feed the lps some cyclopezye but more mysis.
