Once, when my skimmer broke, and I was out of time:
I had an egg crate grow out rack in the tank. It was the first thing to grow algea and within a few days it became an algea net. Every piece of poo was caught in the algaecrate web.
Of course, it was easy enough to swap out once I was able to fix the skimmer.
