Your best bet would be the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR. I have worked with the older 105mm AF-D micro lens, and would probably choose it if I couldn't afford the VR version.

As for speedlights/flashes, I wouldn't really use one while shooting anything on my tank, except if it were equipment shots. I would just find the right white balance, shutter speed and aperture, and use the tripod. A remote would be helpful, or you can use the self-timing mode to reduce vibrations.
