Well overkill yes, but how often do people upgrade. But for a sps tank there is no such thing as overskimming. he will have about 80 gallons total water volume the G3 will skimm 500 gallons per hour, the g2 350 gallons per hour....my philosophy is one cant skimm enough so the more the better...plus down the road if he wants a larger set up the G3 would be a piece of equipment that could still hold its own.
