You're smart not to believe.....he didn't. I used to have a tank full of land hermit crabs for over 3 years. True. they were land and not sea, but same principle. This is not possible. If it was, someone could actually watch the claw grow in front of their eyes. My guess is you just did not see his large claw, or it was hidden (arm/leg behind the back -- i've seen it).
