They do work reliably. I have to say that the #1 drawback is a bit of noise. Mine was screwed to a 2x4 with rubber in between. This sits on the floor between the wall and the stand. Most sounds are caused by vibration if anything is touching it. I keep a foam shroud arround my PVC so that it doesn't vibrate against the wood or glass which works great.
I've yet to hear of a ~ perfect~ pump but I'm sure there are better pumps out there.
