A few weeks later he did it again for not as long as a period. Give it some time and see if it comes back out. Check overflows and filters like others have mentioned just in case.
They make cocoons in the rock with mucous at night so look for that. You didn't rearrange any rock in that time frame did you?

that's good to know---I haven't seen my elegant wrasse in the last week--just disappeared--had it over a year now. There is no evidence of carpet surfing either.
