They can, but most big tank owner don't like the look of them in the display. You could set up a remote fuge for that purpose. That way it can be easily changed if need be.
You probably are already aware of his tank, but yours looks very similar to Oregon Reefs. You might want to hit him up for some ideas on this subject and/or others.
