Thanks Mac, but I already bought th RS 22-812. Looks like it was not a stupid operator problem after all. Comparing reading for DC and AC voltage (the easiest of tests that I knew I was doing right), the new model shows 1.289 for a recharged 1.2v energizer; the old unit starts at -234 and counts up towards zero (with the lead polarity correct). On AC, the new reads 121.2 in an outlet; the old reads 3. Both are in Auto range mode. I guess the old didn't survive the move.
