I use a generic trash can with an open top... no kids here either though... Dryer sheets, fabric softener, Tide in all of it's many scents has never been a problem. Honestly I think this is a non issue based on my experience and others I know.
If there were kids around I'd have the top secured for safety and from 3 or 4 years ago when there were a lot of teenagers here, to keep their curiosity from getting the better of them.
