I can't say for sure that it WON'T work deeper than 10" but I suspect that the water level in the skimmer won't be controllable beyond that depth. I'm guessing the skimmer body water level will be too high and you'll end up with an overflow situation.
Why don't you test it out in a tub and see for yourself?
