40-50x sounds extreme for all less SPS's. Should I be worried about pushing 35x in a mostly softy/LPS tank w/some SPS?
Also, I have seen some wonderful tanks using just MJ1200's or AC802's.

If you can keep the higher flow in the top of the tank it should keep the LPS/Softies down lower happier. Also you can avoid SPS that need really high flow such as table forming species.
