An option would be trying to find a mandarin that takes prepared food. You can ask a store if they have any, and if they claim to, ask to see it feed, or come back when they do feeding. Most places don't care about showing you that they first eat. I've been in a few places that had mandarins during feeding time and a few of them were more than willing to eat prepared foods.

That would be your best bet as a way to have the natural food source plus another.
