They are big consumers indeed. I don't have any sand in my reef and dripping Mrs' Wages keeps up with the demand of over 50 SPS in my 90 gallon reef. Seems that members in my reef club that have DSB that got filled with Detritus over the years couldn't keep up with the ALK demand in their reefs, similiar volume and qty of corals.. They always blamed it on growth, but I personally think dirty DSB's are ALK sinks.

All I pointing out is that dripping Mrs. Wages maintains my ALK and Calcium on my reef with no problems, but I keep it clean and bare.
