I'm not too good with the claw but what I use most of the time is a piece wire from those survey flags (I would think a coat hanger would work too, just thicker) and sharpen the ends to a point. I bent one end like a hook (so you can get under a rock) and leave the other straight. I either get behind them and flick them off the rock and pin them on the glass or poke them right through their shell.
