I think you acted quite appropriately. I myself have discouraged people from buying livestock they aren't ready for, even working in a LFS myself. In fact, the owner of our store, has told us to do such. It creates trust and keeps the customer coming back time and time again.
This kid that worked there, would probably have tried to sell parents a blue-ringed octopus for their childrens bedroom tank to meet quota.
