I'm pretty sure that there are dozens if not hundreds of people who are using them on acrylic tanks, and we really have never heard of a problem except for the one guy's tank, in which there were some extenuating circumstances as well in that situation (pump wasn't functioning correctly, and he said he kept his house warm (80 or so degress, something very uncomfortable).
Either way, I would have used it had I had an acrylic tank, but I don't, and I've used it on my glass tank with no problem, didn't even feel that warm.
