i just blocked the door heading into the mall with a wall of rubble 3 rubbles thick, ad then just kept upgrading the damage and the rubbles strength. I devoted everyone to defend the wall and upgraded their damage and speed. I kept 3 other people scavenging the stores, 1 to each, while periodically upgrading their scavenging skills.
