It's much more likely that the control circuits use SCR's so they can use TTL control signals to gate the outlets on and off. It would also explain why really low current devices have trouble with the outlets staying on. I would not think it would be a good candidate for a DIY unless you have experience with electronics and electrical circuits. funman1 could do it easily but I think most reefer's should stay away from experimental wiring projects.
