High pH (above 8.5 or so) when not using limewater is often simply testing error, but some tanks with poor aeration and lots of photosynthesis may get that high during the day. Mine does, but I use limewater.

Dosing baking soda to boost alkalinity can actually lower pH a tiny bit, at least until the tank blows off the extra CO2.
