Just another way to help keep the water clean of organic wastes. It helps with the clarity of the water.
As for the water changes... depends how lazy I'm being. Sometimes I do a 4g change once a week, sometimes I do a 1g change every few days, sometimes I don't do one for an entire month.
In an ideal world, you shouldn't need to do water changes to keep your water "clean." Ideally water changes would only be done to add back the minerals absorbed by corals.
