i wouldn't stick my hands in your tank without a GFCI. period.

i ran mine externally. never had a problem with it. the only issue was that my sump was not drilled, so i had to raise it up in order for the drain to back into the sump.

you can put a thing ring of aquarium silicone on the o ring before you screw the nut on, which will give you a nice seal, you don't have to use much. the only catch is you have to give it 24 hours...
