your whole water column consists of the tank,...

your whole water column consists of the tank, sump and any refugiums. therefore you can spread out the live rock--it doesn't have to be just in the main tank to be working as a biological filter....

that's good to know---I haven't seen my elegant wrasse in the last week--just disappeared--had it over a year now. There is no evidence of carpet surfing either.

if it is recently purchased live rock then there will be some cycling

in any case I wouldn't waste the money...

More is better when it comes to flow in the tank--the limitation being the corals that you want to keep--lps like between 20 and 40 times the tank gal per hour. SPs keepers like alot more then that....

That is correct--the prime reason for lightly basting the rock and substrate is to get phosphates, nitrates, dissolved organics etc etc--back into the water column where ithey can be filtered...

Alot of reefers state that the only mechanical filtration you need is a protein...
