IMO that's just asking for trouble! If you have to keep them in a tank together for a bit I'd use a divider, it might not look as nice but at least you know they can't have a go at each other....

Yes the living things in your rock will eventually move in to the sand bed and make it "Live". You can also get a handful of sand from different established tanks and add this to your sand as well....

If so, you could put a bit of normal pvc glue inside the skimmer where the hole is and push the glue...

A phosban reactor will do wonders as will a refugium with macro algae in it.
Some people run both some just go with one...
