Do what i suggested, these are diatoms, just mixed into the sand.
Also, test strips are not very reliable.

This is not a good idea. Play sand and such contains silicates which will continuously feed unwanted algae growth within your tank. (hair algae and cyano bacteria).
I would not take shortcuts...
