I do not believe a huge skimmer is necessary.
I did this with an AquaC HOB that was never very good even with some mods, and saw 0 nitrates.

Thanks, I should have mentioned it is one of the fast flush models that is have a lever to produce water or flush the membrane.
Might be a good idea to stop every once in a while and have it flush...
