RBU1, you can buy repacement pads for Magnavores on their site. They sell kits for either glass or acrylic, so their magnets are pretty much universal, you just have to buy the right kit.

I've got 2 of them and they have both been run submerged for quite some time. From what I was told, the ones that have a water line marked on them and are marked as non-submersible were made that way...

Pulling water out of the sump won't help... it's the height of the baffles that's killing him. The only way I can think of to fix your problem without completly remaking your baffles/sump is pulling...
